Featured guests from the film The Dunning Man, which had its world premiere at Cinequest Film Festival. The film is a whirlwind slice of life on the wilder side focused on Connor, a young landlord trying to get his money while also doing right by people - quite a challenge when his tenants include Chechen animal trainers with underworld ties, a rap star who parties so hard the neighbors can't sleep, and a struggling, good-hearted single mother who might just steal the landlord’s heart. The film stars James Carpinello. Ruth Copland talked to the film-makers at Cinequest in the foyer of the iconic California Theatre in San Jose. First let’s hear from the director Michael Clayton and producer Kevin Fortuna.
'The Dunning Man' is based on Kevin Fortuna's book of short stories. Kevin is producer of the film.

Arts Interview: 'Actors Anonymous' | Part 2: In-Depth Conversation with Lead Actor Jake Robbins
This week Ruth Copland's guests are from the Hollywood film 'Actors Anonymous' starring James Franco, Scott Haze and Jake Robbins. The story is based on James Franco's book of short stories about the acting life. The film shows the underbelly of LA and how the path to acting success can be very rocky, if not dark, and considers what success in art and in life really means. The public image of Hollywood is very glamorised and we don’t really see all the people who never hit the big time and what they might have done in order to try to make it and/or how committed they are to their art. In Part 2 Ruth talks to lead actor Jake Robbins about his career and his role in 'Actors Anonymous'.

Arts Interview: In-Depth Conversation with Romi Trower
As her special guest from the arts Ruth Copland is pleased to be interviewing Australian director, writer and actor Romi Trower, whose film What If It Works? had its world premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival in Silicon Valley. 'What If It Works?' is a romantic and endearing film the unlikely subject of which is the burgeoning love between a man with OCD and woman with multiple personalities. Mental illness is increasingly in the news as its stigmatisation and lack of adequate funding for care is discussed. 'What If It Works?' takes a difficult subject and injects it with humanity, light and gentle humour.
Romi has worked as a writer, director and actor in TV, film, and theatre for many years. Her previous short films 'Chocolate Cake' and 'No One Is Listening' Any More picked up international sales and distribution after successfully playing International festivals. Romi has also written a sell-out play Too Beautiful For Garbage. Talking about her feature debut, 'What If It Works?', Romi says it is a film about human beings finding the inner strength to solve their own loneliness not through the more common sexual/romantic relationship but through true friendship and deep understanding. Ruth Copland talked to Romi at the Hammer Theatre in San Jose after the film’s world premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival.

Arts Interview: In-Depth Conversation with Ruken Tekes
As her special guest from the arts Ruth Copland is pleased to be interviewing Turkish human rights expert and film-maker Ruken Tekes, whose short film ‘The Circle’ had its California premiere at Cinequest. ‘The Circle’ has won best film awards at multiple International Film Festivals. It is set in a 12,000-year-old Mesapotamian ancient city which is slated to be flooded in 2017 to create a dam. It is based on true events and features 39 local children. It tells the story of Zelal, a petite 7-year-old whose different ethnic and religious background leads to trouble in the small school she attends on the day the teacher announces the letter of the week is ‘O’. It is a subtle and moving film, artfully capturing the natural beauty of the region and the different aspects of its characters.
The film is the debut of Ruken Tekes and is an artistic exploration of the global reality of discrimination through the true story of the Ezidi Circle. It is a beautiful film both cinematographically and in the simple power of its story. ‘The Circle’ is a production of Sarya Films, a young independent film collective established in 2016 by Ruken Tekeş. As an ancient name, Sarya means 'woman cavalry' and the collective is prioritising bringing women film makers to work together in all stages of film making and to empower them in the film industry in Turkey. Graduating with an EMA in Human Rights and Democritization, Ruken Tekes has worked as a human rights expert for the United Nations and as a lecturing university professor.
Ruth Copland interviews Ruken Tekes at the premiere of ‘The Circle’ in the foyer of the iconic California Theatre at Cinequest, Silicon Valley.

Arts Interview: In-Depth Conversation with Harris Yulin, Catherine Eaton, and Teddy Sears
Ruth Copland has been out and about covering the 2017 Cinequest Film Festival in Silicon Valley and this week she talks to some of the extremely talented film-makers and actors associated with the film 'The Sounding', which had its world premiere at Cinequest.
'The Sounding' is deeply affecting because it speaks to one of our core human needs - to be seen and accepted as our true selves. It tells the story of Liv, who having remained silent for years starts to speak using only the text of Shakespeare as her language. Fully functioning in every other way and self-supporting, she is nevertheless committed to an institution by a well-meaning psychiatrist when her grandfather dies. The story concerns her battle to be allowed to meet the world in the way she wishes, however unconventional. Ruth talks to vetaran actor Harris Yulin (Training Day, Ghostbusters 2), lead actor Teddy Sears (Masters of Sex, The Flash), and director, writer, and lead actor Catherine Eaton.
