Arts Interview: In-Depth Conversation with Maria Semple
This week as her special guest from the arts Ruth Copland is pleased to be interviewing Maria Semple, best-selling author and screenwriter. As a screenwriter/ producer Maria’s work includes Beverly Hills 90210; Mad About You; Ellen; Suddenly Susan; Three Sisters; and Arrested Development. Maria left TV to write fiction and has published three novels. Where’d You Go Bernadette, is a runaway international best-seller, spent a year on The New York Times best-seller list, has been translated into 18 languages, and is to be made into a feature film. Maria’s latest, much-anticipated novel is Today Will Be Different described as “a hilarious, heart-filled story about reinvention, sisterhood, and how sometimes it takes facing up to our former selves to truly begin living.”
Born in California, Maria spent her childhood travelling around Europe with her Bohemian parents until returning to LA for her father, Lorenzo Semple Jr, to work on the Batman TV series. She currently lives in Seattle, where she moved in 2008 with her partner George Meyer and their daughter.
We talk about how Maria creates her flawed but loveable characters, what inspires her writing, and explore why Kirkus says “This author is on her way to becoming a national treasure”.
